I am the great, great grandson of Henry Clay Hawkins, who, after some research, I found is buried in Liberty Hill Cemetary in SE Panola County. His wife was Mattie and they had several children. I recently found a picture of him in a Pan. Co. history book under the Broome family history as Flora Hawkins Broome was one of the children. My great grandfather was Willie C. Hawkins. I would appreciate the chance to speak to anyone with any connections or help in finding more about Henry and Mattie Hawkins. Thanks.

I just discovered this site today. Excellent! How would I go about getting a copy of an obituary that is in the book, OBITUARIES ABSTRACTED, Panola County, Mississippi, Nearly 10,000 from 1840-1970 local newspapers, Extensive, 90 page cross referenced index, compiled by Mary Jane Short Wilson, Winter, 1997? One of many, the information given is: Index number: 3286, Newspaper: Southern Reporter, Newsdate: 04/17/1911 for Mrs. Georgia A. (GILDER) HERRING. She is my late uncles great grandmother. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Great site. Mygggf, John Charles Sutton, was born in MS (prob near Longtown) in 1851. I have found his family in 1870 and 1880 but I am trying to find his parents and he was already married in 1870 so his parents were not on the census with him. I have been unable to find him as a nine year old on any MS census. I am sure he was in MS in 1860. He died near Longtown, MS in 1890. The census lists his parents as born in AL. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you for your help Mary. Jimmy Kimble Enterprise, AL Jimmy Kimble

Their son, George, is buried in the Whitten cemetery, along with Jane and many other relatives. Does anyone have any info on John? Great Site. Many of my ancestors are from Panola County. Oldest known is David Anderson McMurry 1841-1906 At the age of 21, David Anderson McMurry was shot in the bowels on May 31, 1862 at the battle of Seven Pines, near Richmond. He was a member of the Sardis Blues Company E of the 12th. Mississippi Regiment. It is told that he lay under a rail fence for three days after being shot. After the end of the Civil War, he married three times and outlived all three wives. The wives died during or shortly after childbirth. The house he lived in is still standing. It is located at 639 Sullivant Road in Batesville, Mississippi. The injury to David Anderson McMurry was reported in the June 11, 1862 edition of the Weekly Panola Star, Volume 7, Number 21. He was mustered on April 20, 1861 and he left for battle on May 2, 1861. We have information on all of his decendants, but no information prior to 1860 other than a birthdate. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks, -Dave

Many of my ancestors are from Panola County. Grandparents on both my father and mother's sides of the family are buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Sardis. My father was George Alvin Garrett (1910-1995),son of Weedie and Laverna Harmon Garrett. My mother was Olie Louise Low (1914-2002), daughter of David D. and Sarah Ruffin Low. My roots on my father's side go back to the Harmons and Elmores of Lafayette County ... and on my mother's side to the Ruffins and Whites from the Como area. Just had a visit to Panola County a couple of weeks ago and had a wonderful tour of Como and of several cemeteries there. Hope to correspond with those searching out any of the families mentioned above. I am at indygrandma@hotmail.com. THANKS

It's really nice to find some info on Panola County and Pope Station (is this what Pope was referred to around 1860?) My great, great grandfather Robert Pattison and his wife Isabela, son Robert Henry, and brother George came to Panola County from Cornwall, England in 1860. Soon the Civil War broke out. Both Robert and George enlisted in March of 1863, at Graysport (now under water). George was killed at Gettysburg. A few generations later, here I am in Rosedale, British Columbia, Canada, a stray confederate! Just thought I'd say hello, and tell you what a nice website you have, too. Thank you.
